Apple has received a notice from India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) following complaints about performance issues with iPhones after the rollout of its iOS 18 software update. The notice was issued after the Department of Consumer Affairs received grievances on the National Consumer Helpline, according to Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi.

“After receiving complaints on the National Consumer Helpline regarding performance issues in #iPhones following the iOS 18+ software update, the department, after examining these grievances, has issued a notice to #Apple through the CCPA, seeking a response on the matter,” Joshi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Alleged Issues with iOS 18 Update

The complaints come amid Apple’s expansion in one of its fastest-growing markets, where the company has been ramping up its retail presence and manufacturing operations. The performance concerns reportedly coincide with the introduction of a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature in iOS 18, which has faced scrutiny.

The AI-driven feature, designed to provide personalised news and entertainment updates, was disabled in a beta update last week after users reported false or misleading alerts, a phenomenon known as “AI hallucinations.” Apple acknowledged the issue and has temporarily removed the feature in the beta version of iOS 18.3. Apple is reportedly working on a fix, with the final release expected in the coming weeks.

Apple’s iOS 18.2 update introduced several features under its “Apple Intelligence” initiative, including Image Playground, custom emoji creation, and ChatGPT integration into Siri. However, these additions have been outweighed by the technical problems that have prompted government intervention.

Broader Consumer Concerns

In addition to the notice issued to Apple, the CCPA has also taken action against major cab aggregators Ola and Uber. These companies are under scrutiny for alleged differential pricing based on the type of mobile devices customers use.

The investigation centres on reports that Ola and Uber may charge different fares for the same ride based on whether customers are using iPhones or Android devices. This practice, known as differential pricing, has raised concerns about fairness and transparency. While the exact mechanism for this pricing model remains unclear, it has prompted the CCPA to seek explanations from both companies.

“As a follow-up to the earlier observation of apparent #DifferentialPricing based on the different models of mobiles (#iPhones/ #Android) being used, Department of Consumer Affairs through the CCPA, has issued notices to major cab aggregators #Ola and #Uber, seeking their responses,” Joshi stated in another post on X.

The notices are part of a broader push by the Indian government to ensure consumer rights are protected in an increasingly tech-driven marketplace. Both Apple and the cab aggregators will be required to respond to the queries raised by the CCPA.

According to a recent statement On the evening of Thursday 22 September 2022, the City of London Police arrested a 17-year-old in Oxfordshire on suspicion of hacking, as part of an investigation supported by the @NCA_UK ’s National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU). He remains in police custody.

The information came as a shock for everyone when the news broke out that a 17-year-old was able to breach a much-sophosticated app called UBER. The alleged hacker even shared screenshots of admin panels and other credentials for AWS that were claimed to be of UBER by the hacker himself.

The alleged hacker also claimed to have hacked and leaked the data of GTA6 online. The hacker released videos and many other materials that belonged to the GTA series.

This would be worth looking at as now the hacker is in the custody of London police.

During the past year, some of the world’s largest technology companies have been defeated by an international group of hackers, some of whom are teenagers, whose motivations appear to be unusual at times, according to security experts who have investigated the incidents.

Uber Technologies Inc. stated on Monday that it was a target of the Lapsus$ group, which got access to the company’s internal systems and posted messages to employees, including a graphic image. Some hacking groups use malware or steal data, such as credit card numbers or social security numbers, and then sell it. Others are backed by the government and attempt to extort corporate secrets or conduct espionage.

Lapsus$ is a nebulous team that hides behind anonymous online aliases, but members of the group have left enough digital breadcrumbs for law enforcement and private researchers to identify some of them. According to security researchers and law enforcement officials, the group likely includes members from Brazil and the United Kingdom, with several of them being teenagers. It has developed a set of techniques that, while not technically sophisticated, have proven to be devastatingly effective at breaking into some of the world’s largest technology companies in its short history.

Many of these threats target on the systems that businesses have put in place to function effectively in an era of remote work, such as company help desks and systems used to reset passwords and remotely control corporate networks.

The hacking group, Lapsus$, has targeted firms including Nvidia, Microsoft Corp, and Okta Inc, an authentication services company relied on by thousands of major businesses.

In Uber’s case, the attacker most likely bought a username and password that actually belonged to an Uber contractor on the dark web after it was stolen from the contractor’s computer via malicious programs, the company said in a blog post on the incident on Monday. The hacker then attempted to log into Uber’s networks using these credentials.

Because Uber requires a “two-factor authentication,” “login, these attempts resulted in messages being sent to the contractor’s phone asking if they were really attempting to log in. This initially stopped the attack, but the hacker did not give up and continued to make the requests. “The contractor eventually accepted one, and the attacker successfully logged in,” “Uber stated.

Ride-share company Uber has brought startling news to customers in which it confirmed the hacking of its internal system and the company’s account of multiple third-party systems.

In a report, the New York Times mentioned that Uber was investigating the compromise of its internal system. They have tried to arrange meetings with their engineers in offline mode. As many of their employees have confirmed the access of slack accounts of Uber employees to hackers that is a thing to worry for them.

This whole series of events has shaken the whole Uber to its core. Uber confirmed this hacking. Several security researchers have confirmed the contact access with hackers.

“We are currently responding to a cyber security incident. We are in touch with law enforcement and will post additional updates here as they become available,” Uber’s communications team wrote on Twitter.

The extent of compromise done by hackers is known yet but the screenshot posted by the actor, indicate they have access to Uber’s administrative account on third-party services.

“We’re in close contact with Uber’s security team, have locked their data down, and will continue to assist with their investigation,” said Chris Evans, CISO for HackerOne.

Corben Leo, a security researcher, and chief marketing officer at Zellic, told SC Media that he learned directly from the hacker that the individual phished an Uber employee to gain access to Uber’s corporate VPN. From there, they were able to scan Uber’s internal corporate network, where they found administrative user credentials for Uber’s Thycotic account, a privileged access management system, through a shared network resource.

“Using this they were able to access Uber’s AWS environment, GSuite, Duo (can thus bypass 2FA for anything), OneLogin, get Domain Admin, etc.,” Corben said through a Twitter direct message.

Leo told SC Media that he had not tried after that to make any contact with hackers.
