Apple has received a notice from India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) following complaints about performance issues with iPhones after the rollout of its iOS 18 software update. The notice was issued after the Department of Consumer Affairs received grievances on the National Consumer Helpline, according to Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi.

“After receiving complaints on the National Consumer Helpline regarding performance issues in #iPhones following the iOS 18+ software update, the department, after examining these grievances, has issued a notice to #Apple through the CCPA, seeking a response on the matter,” Joshi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Alleged Issues with iOS 18 Update

The complaints come amid Apple’s expansion in one of its fastest-growing markets, where the company has been ramping up its retail presence and manufacturing operations. The performance concerns reportedly coincide with the introduction of a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature in iOS 18, which has faced scrutiny.

The AI-driven feature, designed to provide personalised news and entertainment updates, was disabled in a beta update last week after users reported false or misleading alerts, a phenomenon known as “AI hallucinations.” Apple acknowledged the issue and has temporarily removed the feature in the beta version of iOS 18.3. Apple is reportedly working on a fix, with the final release expected in the coming weeks.

Apple’s iOS 18.2 update introduced several features under its “Apple Intelligence” initiative, including Image Playground, custom emoji creation, and ChatGPT integration into Siri. However, these additions have been outweighed by the technical problems that have prompted government intervention.

Broader Consumer Concerns

In addition to the notice issued to Apple, the CCPA has also taken action against major cab aggregators Ola and Uber. These companies are under scrutiny for alleged differential pricing based on the type of mobile devices customers use.

The investigation centres on reports that Ola and Uber may charge different fares for the same ride based on whether customers are using iPhones or Android devices. This practice, known as differential pricing, has raised concerns about fairness and transparency. While the exact mechanism for this pricing model remains unclear, it has prompted the CCPA to seek explanations from both companies.

“As a follow-up to the earlier observation of apparent #DifferentialPricing based on the different models of mobiles (#iPhones/ #Android) being used, Department of Consumer Affairs through the CCPA, has issued notices to major cab aggregators #Ola and #Uber, seeking their responses,” Joshi stated in another post on X.

The notices are part of a broader push by the Indian government to ensure consumer rights are protected in an increasingly tech-driven marketplace. Both Apple and the cab aggregators will be required to respond to the queries raised by the CCPA.

Ola Electric may launch its new EV 3W (Electric 3-wheeler) within the next 3-4 months. Recently, pics and videos of the upcoming vehicle got leaked on the Internet, which revealed some exciting features of the vehicle. According to reports, the upcoming vehicle is tentatively named ‘Raahi’, which in Hindi means ‘traveler’.

Ola seems to be gearing up with minimal touches on the design. Focus has been noticed on upgrading the space and practicality of the vehicle. The front is incorporated with square headlights, a large windshield, and an A-pillar-mounted ORVMS. Additionally, doors were noticed on the vehicle which would add a new layer of cabin safety.

Ola is aiming to bestow the vehicle with category-first features, which would cater to more space and convenient alternatives to existing electric 3-wheelers. Possibility of further advancements including air conditioning are also possible for the vehicle according to reports.

Reports further suggest that the new Ola EV 3W might also get a goods carrier variant. This would feature a sizeable loading bay, which would be customizable according to one’s needs.

Other players in the electric 3W market, with which the Ola EV 3W will land up in competition after its launch include the likes of Mahindra Treo, Piaggio Ape e-city, and Bajaj RE. With the development and launch of their new EV, Ola aims to enter the commercial vehicle segment.

There hasn’t been any official mention of the possible prices at which the vehicle will be launched. However, there’s a possibility of the vehicle getting launched around the price segment of Rs 2 lakh – Rs 3.5 lakh, as other competitors like Mahindra, Piaggio, and Bajaj’s prices fall in this segment. With Ola aiming to compete, we can expect a lower price than products like Bajaj’s electric 3-wheeler whose price starts from about Rs 3.30 lakh (ex-showroom).

Ola recently announced that they have fully exited Google Maps and have moved to in-house Ola Maps for which they will not have to pay a penny. After this announcement now the company has announced the free access of Ola Maps to all developers for a whole year. The founder of the company Bhavish Aggarwal wrote on X announcing this “We’ve been using Western apps to map India for too long and they don’t get our unique challenges: street names, urban changes, complex traffic, non-standard roads, etc. Ola Maps tackles these with AI-powered India-specific algorithms, real-time data from millions of vehicles, leveraging and contributing massively to open source (5 million+ edits just last year!)”.

Ola says in a blog post that “Ola is built to utilize the most diverse set of data and send updates in the real-time to ensure the most accurate mapping data as possible”. It will utilize the “real-time data from millions of vehicles using Ola Maps, a fleet of Ola S1’s equipped with 360 cameras, open-source government data repositories, OpenStreetMap, partnerships and proprietary sources to build essential map features such as roads, points of interest, street furniture, building geometry, and traffic signals”.

As per the blog post, the Ola Maps will be intelligent enough to generate context-based results, based on the behavior patterns, and contextual cues that fine-tune the result for the user. Though it’s free for a year but will soon be available on a paid basis for developers thus allowing them to integrate the Ola Maps API in their Android and iOS apps and services via Krutrim Cloud.

The co-founder of Ola Cabs and Ola Electric Bhavish Agarwal has shared a celebrating moment on Twitter through a post that reads ” 600 stores now! Scaled up in a record 8 months. Getting towards 1000 stores soon”. He is considered the most ambitious, straightforward entrepreneur and is working towards revolutionizing EV mobility. Bhavish Agarwal wants a complete rejection of petrol and a total commitment to EVs by 2025.

Ola is also working rigorously towards its cell gigafactory. It will be the largest cell manufacturing plant in the country. Agarwal in an earlier tweet sharing the video of the site wrote on Twitter ” Work started and moving along at full speed on our cell gigafactory! It will be India’s biggest and amongst the world’s biggest cell factories. And the centerpiece for #endICEage!”.

This gigafactory will be situated in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district and will have a capacity of producing 10 gigawatt-hours of battery cells per annum. It would be a major leap for not only OLA but also for other companies which depend on cell imports. These imports have never been so much more vulnerable than now because of various factors affecting the supply chain.

Ola is rigorously working on its aim to make sure no petrol two-wheelers are sold in India after 2025. In parallel with this aim, Ola has achieved a big milestone that will bring you much closer to Ola Electric than ever before. Bhavish Agarwal the founder of Ola Electric shared the news of 400 stores across India now. He shared this news on Twitter and also mentioned that Ola will open its 500th store by the end of April and the 1000th by the 15th of August. Just a few days ago Bhavish Agarwall shared the news about the successful opening of 50 stores by community members. However, it’s easy to order but direct purchase from the store is still considered as a reliable method that only Ola stores will fulfill.

Ola is also working on opening Hypercharger at multiple locations. With Ola’s Electric new feature riders can check if the hyper charger/normal charger is in use or idle. This feature was the most requested feature according to Bhavish Agarwal.

OLA Electric

Ola is an Indian electric two-wheeler manufacturer based in Bengaluru. It manufactures electric scooters to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable mobility. Other than this Ola electric has also invested in the R&D of lithium-ion battery cells and has employed researchers for that. As per the reports, the battery of EVs is the most expensive component whose manufacturing in India can cut costs by around 30%. As of now, no information is available about it but as soon as it arrives we will bring it to you.
